“The Thursday Murder Club” by Richard Osman

“The Thursday Murder Club” is a murder mystery novel by a famous British TV host Richard Osman. It has been a while since I last read a murder mystery but I could say that I am fairly obsessed with detective stories and went through my fair share of Agatha Christie and Arthur Conan Doyle. I have to say that “The Thursday Murder Club” was no exception and I enjoyed it thoroughly.

The backdrop of the story is set in a retirement village in England, Cooper Chase, and centers around a group of 4 friends – retirees who like looking through old cases never solved by police and try to investigate them. They usually meet every Thursday, hence the name, and try to solve theoretical crimes until the actual crimes start happening around them. The four friends include Elizabeth, the former M15 agent, Ibrahim, a psychotherapist, Ron, a union leader and Joyce, a retired nurse. For their first actual case, they are looking into the murder of Tony Curran, the real estate developer who was mysteriously killed at his home. I will leave a plot at this to not give away too much.

You always know when it’s your first time, don’t you? But you rarely kow when it’s your final time.

I loved this book – it was funny and witty and you never knew what was coming next which completely keeps you hooked to the story. I also love the characters in the story – they are distinct, colorful, and interesting to observe. Reading this story feels both like a warm hug and an exciting adventure. One thing that I wished for is that perhaps the ending and the mystery would be a bit more complex but this aspect does improve in the subsequent books from the series.

One interesting aspect that the book made me think about is where is the line between justice and morality? Sometimes something fair and moral does not necessarily mean that it is just. And something that is just in the legal sense does not mean that it is moral. Something to think about.

In life you have to learn to count the good days. yOU HAVE TO TUCK THEM IN YOUR POCKET AND CARRY THEM AROUND WITH YOU. sO i AM PUTTING TODAY IN MY POCKET AND i’m off to bed.

I loved this book. It was lovely and I really do not remember enjoying a book so much in a while. Definitely recommend for long winter days!
