“The Bullet That Missed” by Richard Osman

“The Bullet That Missed” by Richard Osman is the third book in the Thursday Murder Club series where we meet again Elizabeth, Joyce, Ron, and Ibrahim, a group of pensioners that investigate murders for fun. I read the whole boom on my flight from Amsterdam to New York and I can only say that the series gets better and better.

In the third part, two storylines are developing. The first one is that Elizabeth is kidnapped along with her husband Stephen and she is forced to kill her friend, a former KGB agent Viktor if she wants to stay alive. The person who is threatening her is a mysterious genius “Viking”. For the second storyline, the Thursday Murder Club goes into investigating the murder of a journalist, a local reporter, who died many years ago but with no body or other traces found. As the plot develops, the two storylines intertwine and get more and more entangled and connected. I will leave it at that not to give too much away.

Again, I really enjoyed this book in the series and I think the mysteries get more and more intricate and exciting as the series progresses. Here are some of the quotes that I liked the most:

***

“Elizabeth knows she is too far from home anyway. There will be no cavalry to save her this time. She has got herself into this mess, and she will have to get herself out of it.”

***

“Time to quit all this nonsense? Elizabeth laughs to herself. What is there in life other than nonsense?”

***

“It is far too cold to swim but Joyce would not be dissuaded. Elizabeth had told her not to be silly, and that the pool would still be there in the summer. “Ah, but we may not be,” Joyce had replied, and she was right.”

***

I really recommend these series – it is light, it is fun and it is full of mystery!
