“Daisy Jones and The Six” by Taylor Jenkins Reid

“Daisy Jones and The Six” by Taylor Jenkins Reid is the second book that I read from this author. I liked “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo so much that I wanted to explore more of the author’s writing and it definitely did not disappoint.

“Daisy Jones and The Six” tells the story of a music band in a format of interviews with each band member. I really like it because it made the story much easier to read and have different perspectives and points of view. The plot starts with a background about the music band “The Six” and Daisy Jones, a singer, and how each of them started their journeys separately. Later on, “The Six” and Daisy Jones collaborate on a single together which grows into writing a whole album. The book captures both the creative process and the intricacies of the relationships between the band members.

In the center of the storyline is the story of Daisy Jones and Billy, the lead singer and writer from the book. Billy is committed to his wife Camilla, but is obviously in love with Daisy. Daisy also desperately fell for Billy. Although the two can not and choose not to be together, their love channels into their creativity and the music that they make. I liked this story. We often think about romantic love as something that has either a breakup or a happy ending. But love has many shades – sometimes you can love a person and not be with them and just knowing that they are doing fine is enough for you. It is love that you carry through your life and I think we are lucky if we ever get that.

“There is this peace that comes with knowing you have a person in the world who would do anything for you, that you would do anything for.”

“You have these lines you won’t cross. But then you cross them. And suddenly you possess the very dangerous information that you can break the rule and the world won’t instantly come to an end.”

“I don’t believe in soul mates anymore and I’m not looking for anything. But if I did believe in them, I’d believe your soul mate was somebody who had all the things you didn’t, that needed all the things you had. Not somebody who’s suffering from the same stuff you are.

“But giving up was not good. Especially not after trying for, you know, a couple of hours, tops. That’s the problem with people who don’t have to work for things. They don’t know how to work for things.”

Confidence is being okay being bad, not being okay being good.”

“I’m saying that when you really love someone, sometimes the things they need may hurt you, and some people are worth hurting for.”

I loved my wife. I was faithful to my wife from the very minute I straightened up. I tried desperately to never feel anything else for any other woman. But…Everything that made Daisy burn, made me burn. Everything I loved about the world, Daisy loved about the world. Everything I struggled with, Daisy struggled with. We were two halves. In that way that you are only the same with a few other people. In that way that you don’t even feel like you have to say your own thoughts because you know the other person is already thinking them. How could I be around Daisy Jones and not be mesmerized by her? Not fall in love with her?”

“Life is about who is holding your hand and, I think, whose hand you commit to holding.”

It is a lovely read that I definitely recommend if you want something comforting for your heart!
