“The Last Devil to Die” by Richard Osman is the last and most recent book in his Thursday Murder Club series (I posted about three previous parts, “The Bullet That Missed“, “The Man Who Died Twice” and “The Thursday Murder Club” earlier).
In “The Last Devil to Die”, we meet again with our four friends which include Elizabeth, the former M15 agent, Ibrahim, a psychotherapist, Ron, a union leader and Joyce, a retired nurse. In this part, they investigate the crime of Elizabeth’s old friend and antics collector being shot in the middle of the forest. The “magnificent four” sets out to investigate the crime along with uncovering some drug dealers and criminal bands along the way. That will be as such as I could say without giving away spoilers.
I found this part of the book series to be the saddest – this is where Elizabeth’s husband who suffers from dementia decides that it is the time to go. It is both a beautiful love story and a tragic ending at the same time and it is interesting to see Elizabeth grappling with all these emotions while also handling murders and crimes at the same time.
I don’t have many quotes from this book but just two that really stood out:
***
“Love can mean so many different things, can’t it? And just because it’s precious doesn’t mean it can’t be tough.”
***
“You’d think that the closer you get to death, the more it would matter, but I’m finding the opposite to be true. I don’t fear it. I fear pain, but I don’t fear death.“
***
My review for this book is as strong as for the other books in the series – definitely recommend this read!
