“Emily Wilde’s Map Of The Otherlands” by Heather Fawcett

I don’t think this ever happened to me before but I was actually looking forward to the release of this book. I read the first book from the series a couple of months ago after finding it randomly in one of the bookstores in Rotterdam and I absolutely loved the story. The second part did not disappoint.

I find that there is something magical about the books that take you in their world and you just dive in and forget the reality for a moment. If the author can do it with their story, by default, for me, it becomes a good book. I stop paying attention to the writing and details because I am so enchanted by the storyline. This is exactly the case with Emily Wilde’s series.

In the first book, we get to know Emily, the professor at Cambridge who goes on an expedition to explore the fairies and folks and discovers along the way that her colleague, Wendell, is also one of the folk. In the second book of the series, Emily goes on another adventure to help Wendell to find the door to his kingdom. There is romance, friendship, science, mystics, and everything that intertwines in this book. I am definitely not a fan of this genre but I found these books to be exceptionally good. I can’t wait for the third part to come out. Here is a small excerpt that I liked:

***

“I believe my shock must have shown on my face, for he laughed. “I’m not likely to forget about my failings with you at my side, Em.”
That’s good. You won’t notice them otherwise, and will get yourself into all sorts of trouble because of it.”
I expected him to laugh, but instead his green eyes grew serious, and he took my hand. “Never be afraid to tell me.”

***

I really recommend this book – it is light, it is fun and it is perfect to escape long Dutch winters.
